There will be restrictions and limitations to traditional TA support. Clear communication, specific direction and possibly training will be required to ensure that your TAs are able to support you properly.

In addition, it is extremely challenging to simultaneously teach a class and manage the logistical and technology requirements needed to in a hybrid environment successfully. Separate from your class TAs, administrative support will be provided to you during class.

Recommendations

  • Complete CDE training for Classroom Engagement Monitors
  • Determine TA roles and responsibilities to determine the number of TAs needed for your course
  • Next, identify potential TAs to support the course
    • You can source TAs by drawing from previous, successful students and/or drawing from applications to the Undergraduate Office
    • If more are needed, ask for recommendations from already identified TAs
  • If possible, provide the necessary training and/or preparation to TAs prior to the first day of class
  • Duties may include but are not limited to: tracking attendance and participation, grading assignments, holding virtual office hours
  • If needed, develop tools for TA/Faculty collaboration
    • E.g., shared spreadsheets for participation and attendance, rubrics and notes for assignments, guidance for office hours, etc.
    • Leverage tools such as Box, Google Docs/Sheets, and/or Microsoft Teams as needed
  • Ensure that TAs are approved by HR and setup in the system (email: Jaya Baht) and provide TAs access to Canvas (email: Terry Wirtel)
