At some point during the semester, the connection to Zoom could be lost, regardless of whether you are teaching in the classroom or from home.

Recommendations

In HyFlex/Hybrid Model

  • Continue with the lecture and have the Classroom Engagement Monitor contact AV to fix

In Virtual Model

  • Tell students that they need to stay connected to Zoom for five minutes after the instructor drops off
    • Students need to stay near email for an additional 10 minutes in case the instructor contacts them to return to the Zoom session
    • If the instructor does not return, the remainder of class is canceled (to be “made up” by the professor recording thoughts/insights on the missed content)

Pros & Cons

Pros

  • Provides a consistent policy so students are aware of what to expect
  • Good balance between asking the students to save some time (15 minutes total) for the class in case it restarts, but not having them sit around for up to an hour or more checking email until they hear from the instructor

Cons

  • In a HyFlex or Hybrid model, the students in the classroom will continue the session even though the Zoom recording is not working
