Unconventional environments can create uncertainty and unfamiliarity for students related to alignment on what is expected of them from faculty throughout the semester.
Recommendations
- Document student exceptions for the course (e.g., evaluation criteria, attendance expectations, etc.) clearly in either the syllabus or within a dedicated Module/page within Canvas
- Students should be required to sign into Zoom with their WUSTL key to ensure that their name is visible and Breakout Room functionality will work properly
- Students should be encouraged to have their video enabled
- Use of a virtual background is encouraged
- If not possible, be sure they take privacy concerns into account
- Have a path for students in instances where there are technology issues (e.g., no WiFi, PC crash) during class
- If their connection is dropped, one example is to have students contribute to online discussion boards
- If the instructor’s connection is dropped, then refer to What To Do If Zoom Crashes
- Make it clear to students how to meet expectations
- For example, how to participate (e.g., chat full question, chat question marks, raise “hand”) and what will count as attendance
- Ensure that all virtual activities are understood (e.g., Canvas Discussion Boards)
